Each month, our intrepid fashion reporter Erin Heffernan hits the streets in search of fashionistas bringing their bold styles and unique looks to the Texas Coast.
Day job: Barista at the Galveston social hub, Mod Coffeehouse, 2126 Postoffice St. in the island’s downtown.
Where we spotted her: Serving up some lattes behind the coffeehouse counter.
What inspired her look: “I’ve always been really inspired by Kurt Cobain. I like to wear stuff like he did that is grungy and laid back. I love how it looks and it’s really comfortable to wear to work.”
Tattoo story: “My favorite tattoo would have to be this one on my arm. It’s a coffee cup that says “Death Before Decaf” because of my job and I’m also just really into coffee. There are also some berries around it — where the coffee beans come from. I love the way that one turned out.” Gonzales highly recommends her tattoo artist, Chuck Jones, who works on the island at The Tattoo Shop, 5702 Stewart Road.
Favorite stores: “I’m all about Galveston, so I love the ha.ba’s boutique in Galveston (2213 Postoffice St.). I also really like shopping at second hand stores like Buffalo Exchange and Goodwill. You can usually find something that is already worn so it’s really unique, not one of 50 of the same thing at a department store. Plus the cheap prices are a plus.”
What she’s wearing:
• Eyewear: “My glasses are very Mrs. Doubtfire-ish. They are the first pair with clear frames that I’ve tried and I really like them. They are actually the same shape as the pair I wore when I first got glasses when I was 8 years old. I bought them at TSO right downtown because they have a really great selection.” (Texas State Optical, 515 22nd St.)
• Jewelry: “My necklace is a symbol of a heart chakra, which is one of the seven centers of energy in the body. I got it as a gift and I love it and wear it because it was given to me from someone who I believe loves me.”
• Shirt: “This is a shirt I bought at Hot Topic years ago, but I like it because it is a ‘Star Wars’ shirt but it’s written in Hebrew.”
• Jeans: “I bought these ripped jeans at ha.ba’s in Galveston. I love them because they are so comfortable, almost like sweatpants. They’re the best.”
