New shop serves up smoothies and wraps with island vibe
In a cheerful yellow house on a corner next to the University of Texas Medical Branch campus, a happy couple is building a business to better health one sip at a time. Lolo Kai Smoothies and Wraps opened in the fall last year to provide a healthier and affordable alternative to fast food in Galveston.
Owners Kris and Tani Trahan welcome patrons to their shop with radiant smiles. Although they’re still considered the “new kids” on the block, their freshly minted business already has attracted a steady local following.
The casual vibe is an island mix of surf, sand and, of course, smoothies. Bright tangerine hued walls exude warmth and energy. The restaurant’s straightforward setup leaves no question — place your order at the counter and head back outside. Customers not in a hurry can relax at picnic tables beneath large, red umbrellas and leisurely enjoy their lunch or light dinner.
The list of fresh fruit smoothies dominates one of the wall menus. Weighted heavily toward tropical flavors, many of the smoothies rely on a sherbet base that complements the blends of fresh pineapple, berries, mangos and juices. Some of their playful menu names, like the G-Town Brown protein smoothie, give a nod to local conditions and life at the beach. Red Bull-infused blended drinks also are available to fuel late night study sessions for students attending medical school.
Biting into a wrap sandwich provides a satisfying crunch thanks to the Trahans’ commitment to fresh ingredients. Crisp romaine lettuce, carrots and cucumber marry with cheeses and meats with the help of a variety of spicy dressings made in house.
Customers can select spinach, wheat, tomato or herb and garlic tortillas to flatter the flavor profile of their wrap. The Asian Chicken Avo is popular among patrons as is the PB&G — a peanut butter, banana, granola wrap served on a wheat tortilla with a vanilla yogurt and honey drizzle. Veggie wraps also are available.
Lolo Kai Smoothies and Wraps is serving up fresh, wholesome fare, proving that fast food doesn’t have to be deep-fried.
