Where diners can find wholesome meals in a deep-fried desert
The Gulf Coast dining scene can seem, at least at times, dominated by deep-fried seafood platters and po’boys. While those tasty dishes certainly have their place, discovering an alternative that features organic produce, artisanal products and a wholesome menu is truly like stumbling across, well, an oasis. Oasis Juice Bar & Market has been serving nourishing meals in Galveston’s downtown for more than five years.
Patrons are greeted at the sky blue doors by a whimsical garden of butterflies, bees, ladybugs and dragonflies painted along the window panes. Once inside the spacious building, light bounces off the glossy, reclaimed wood tabletops and a plush velvet couch warrants some lounge time. Warm tangerine walls decorated with eclectic art exude a happy vibe, as do the cheerful chalkboard menus and signs.
Oasis offers a full menu of freshly squeezed juice blends of fruits, vegetables and herbs, as well as all-natural smoothies, including the popular Monkey N Around, a mix of ripe banana, creamy almond butter, crisp apple and chocolate almond milk. There’s also the Tropic Tease, a combination of fresh mango, sweet pineapple, banana, bright lime, ginger, coconut oil and spirulina. Customers can add nutritious ingredients such as aloe vera, hemp seeds, fresh mint, coconut meat, almond butter and wheatgrass to customize their beverages.
Diners place and pay for their order at the counter below the indoor pergola. Almost a dozen hot and cold satisfying sandwiches and veggie burgers are prepared fresh on organic multigrain bread or gluten-free millet and chia bread. The Avocado, Cheese & Oasis Sprouts sandwich, the Chickpea of the Sea sandwich and the Oasis original veggie burger have become menu staples.
Salads also are available, including the Scarlett Quinoa, which is prepared with roasted beets and tart cranberries. It arrives on a bed of organic greens garnished with raw red onion, salty feta crumbles and sunflower sprouts and is accompanied by a side of crispy lentil chips. Customers can’t stop raving about the Rainbow Pad Thai salad, which is made from raw, spiralized zucchini, shredded cabbage and bell pepper slices and tossed in an irresistible peanut lime dressing.
For late risers, the breakfast menu is served until 2 p.m. daily. Standout dishes include the vegan waffles topped with fried coconut and banana or mixed berries, as well as the quinoa omelet, a fold of fluffy yard eggs filled with organic quinoa, fresh feta, avocado and sprouts drizzled with a savory balsamic glaze over a bed of tender leafy greens. Vegan and gluten-free substitutions aren’t a problem and the helpful staff is only too happy to make recommendations. In addition to its regular menu, Oasis announces a daily soup and lunch special on its Facebook page.
Oasis stocks its market shelves with a variety of natural grocery products. While diners wait for their food, they can shop for items such as local Pure Beeing Honey, 3rd Coast Kombucha, Big Bend Roasters coffee made in Marfa and Bragg Liquid Aminos. Many of the grocery items for sale are used in Oasis’ kitchen, so customers who swoon over the salad dressing can buy a bottle to enjoy at home.
