Shelbie Bottera loves almost everything about rodeo season, including the music, food and fashion. She attends both the Galveston County Fair & Rodeo and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. We caught up with Bottera, who modeled some rodeo attire for us on the county fairgrounds.

Q: What’s your connection to the Galveston County Fair & Rodeo?
A: I started raising pigs through Dickinson 4-H when I was 10 years old up until I was 18. It was a great learning experience and a big responsibility as a kid. This was something my dad and I always enjoyed together. I must add, picking out my show outfits was always so fun — that’s where my mom’s help always came in handy.
Q: Describe your rodeo season.
A: Rodeo season is so exciting to me — it’s like Christmas, but in the spring! The true Texan hype is everywhere you look, starting from little cowboys doing mutton bustin’, to the bull riding in the big arena. The cook-offs, concerts and pig show are always a must-see for me … and I can’t forget the shopping at all of the booths.
Q: What’s your favorite rodeo event?
A: I’d have to say the country music concerts are my favorite events during rodeo. Getting a group of family or friends and dancing the night away never gets old.
Q: Describe your fashion style.
A: From business chic to Western. From glamorous to athletic to surfer girl. I own a closet full with a variety of fashion styles.
Q: How many pairs of cowboy boots do you own?
A: I own 10 pairs of cowboy boots and counting. You can never have too many, right?
Q: Do you have a favorite rodeo food?
A: I’d have to say a good ol’ county fair corn dog or fried Oreos! And barbecue, of course!
Q: What kind of vehicle do you drive and why?
A: I drive a 2015 white Ford F-150. Growing up, my aunt, whom I have always idolized, drove trucks. So, following her footsteps, I soon became a truck girl, too. Not to mention they drive better on the beach versus a small car.
Q: What’s your favorite song right now?
A: I love every song on SiriusXM The Highway. But if I had to choose one, it would probably be “Girl on the Coast” by Jessie James Decker.
Q: What’s your favorite thing about living on the Texas Gulf Coast?
A: I think my most favorite thing is that the living is just easy. Something about driving with your windows down along the water, the small-knit towns, the people. It’s so refreshing. I definitely have a pure saltwater soul.
