We asked on Facebook: What’s the best — or worst — coastal Christmas gift you’ve ever received or given?
Best gift ever — private fishing charter trip for four!
– Richard Conner
Best was a cruise out of Galveston during New Year’s. Worst? A hermit crab and nasty cage. Yuck.
– Bobbey White
Best was monogrammed canvas and teak beach chairs.
– Kathy Pritchett
The best for me was the dollhouse my Paw Paw Richie built for me that is a replica of the island home I grew up in at 1202 Broadway.
– Ellie Peters
Best was the maid set I got at age 5 with the plastic broom and all. Worst that same year — I found out about Santa!
– Jennie S. Latham
A holy mackerel ornament. It is a fish dressed in a white priest robe complete with a crucifix! I laugh every time I put it on the tree! I also have an Eelvis ornament — an eel dressed as Elvis. Hilarious!
– Carol Cunningham Ward
Best gift was God blessing me to have the wonderful view of Offatts Bayou. It’s the gift that never ends. Sunrise. Sunsets. Most beautiful this time of year. Moody Gardens Christmas displays from any of the 38 windows in our home. Feeling grateful.
– Ed Muncey
We got a copy of the Constitution!
– Angela Bivens
Atocha Coins from the Mel Fisher salvage from the little kite store at the end of the seawall.
– Karl Reid
The white, fluffy snowfall on Christmas Eve!
– Janice Stohlman

– Jerry Jackson
Cute little Christmas trees made of small oyster shells. I put a starfish on top.
– Sylvia Streater
The best ever was the Christmas Eve birth of my granddaughter, Lauren.
– Jan Goudeau Lawrence
Our granddaughter born on Christmas Day. It was definitely the best present ever.
– Harry St. John
A friend of friend, etc. knew her BFF and husband enjoyed the occasional gin and tonic. Gift giver gave them a small, potted lime tree and a very fine bottle of gin. The tree grew and flourished in our climate. Recipient and family enjoyed fresh limes for years. Very great and thoughtful gift.
– Traci B. Craft
My mom was talked into buying me red velvet overalls by a slick salesperson. OMG!
– Donald Nurdin
A Super Girl onesie.
– Rosi Edgington
Worst is a running tradition between my brother and I. He always gives me a Chia Pet!
– William “Boog” Cram
My boyfriend in college bought me a shoe phone and a koozie shaped like a keg of beer but he had it wrapped at the mall so, obviously, I was expecting more … He said that he knew I liked to talk on the phone and drink beer.
