You’ve heard the phrase: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” It’s probably the oldest travel advice around — dating to 387 A.D.
Here’s the story behind it.
“When St. Augustine arrived in Milan, he observed that the Church did not fast on Saturday as did the Church at Rome. He consulted St. Ambrose, bishop of Milan, who replied: ‘When I am at Rome, I fast on a Saturday; when I am at Milan, I do not. Follow the custom of the Church where you are.’ The comment was changed to “When they are at Rome, they do there as they see done” by Robert Burton in his “Anatomy of Melancholy.” Eventually it became “When in Rome, do as the Romans do,” according to Trivia-Library.com.
Old as the advice is, it’s still wise and reminds us that we should observe and enjoy local customs in our travels. While our tourist destinations are fun, visitors stand a better chance of understanding a community — and returning — by visiting the local hangouts. Who doesn’t feel victorious chancing upon a great burger joint or seafood shack off the beaten path? It’s like sharing a secret.
In this issue, we ask readers to let us in on their secrets as we attempted to compile a list of where the locals go.
Some locals weren’t so sure they wanted to share their secrets — including all the back roads they take to avoid traffic in the peak visitor season. Just check out Shorelines.
If we missed your favorite local spot, let us know. And whether you’re visiting or live in communities on the upper Texas coast, we hope you enjoy this issue.
Coast Monthly extends a sincere thank you to Christine Hopkins and the staff of The Tremont House and The Rooftop Bar, 2300 Ship’s Mechanic Row in Galveston’s downtown, for allowing us space for our cover photo shoot. The Rooftop Bar was bustling on a Saturday night, but everyone helped us get the perfect shot.
Our model was naturally gorgeous, but we’d also like to thank our talented beauty team for their beautiful work. A special thanks to hairstylist Rebecca Rivera and makeup artist Kenzie Gonzales, both of Total Technique Salon, 3226 13th Ave. N. in Texas City.
