Each month, Coast Monthly visits with some of the most charming people on the Texas Coast to chat about their style.
Katina Gilmore not only just celebrated her 46th birthday, she started a new career as a registered nurse. Already a licensed esthetician, Gilmore felt combining the two occupations would go hand in hand with her passion — skin care.
Gilmore’s other passion is her hometown of Texas City, where she lives just mere blocks from the newly revitalized 6th Street area and the Texas City Dike. “There used to be a JC Penney on 6th Street where the Texas City Museum is now, so it’s good to see that area shine again,” Gilmore said. “I also went crabbing on the dike with my two kids when they were young, and just two years ago, my daughter and I drove to the end of the dike and saw pink dolphins swimming.”
Gilmore is enamored with the coastal stretch from Beaumont to Corpus Christi and has fond memories of spending time on Galveston’s beaches and celebrating Mardi Gras in the historic seaport city.
Here are a few of her favorite things:
Black sheer overlay dress: This is so multipurpose, that you can dress it up or down. I’ve worn it over high-waist denim jeans, a body suit, blouse and leggings — it’s so versatile.
Heels: These multi-color sequin high heels work for any festive occasion. I usually wear them to parties with a black dress, but they also work with jeans.
Bob Mackie purse: With its beaded, cylinder shape, this purse is a real conservation piece. It has a matching lipstick holder and is an attention grabber. It was my mom’s, and she gave it to me years ago.
Perfume: Black Opium by Yves Saint Laurent is more of an evening fragrance, but I love it. It’s very aromatic with a strong, musky oriental scent.
Book: “Breath, Eyes, Memory” by Edwidge Danticat is one of my favorite books chosen as an Oprah Book Club selection years ago. It’s about a young girl growing up poor in Haiti, her escape from poverty and the subsequent struggles she endured.
Jacket: I can wear this Ann Taylor faux jacket well into spring, due to its cropped style and versatility. It works with jeans and heels or over evening attire.
Ring: This is an amethyst and rhinestone ring that my son bought for me when he was 12 years old with his allowance money. He’s now 25, and this is so special to me.
Cross necklace: This is a rose gold and gold cross given to me by my 91-year-old grandmother. It used to belong to her, but she wanted me to have it.
Hat: I love this eggplant and gray felt hat with pink band. It’s perfect for windy days, and we get a lot of those here.
