These restaurants serve up Texas-sized, chicken-fried steak
We like to say everything’s bigger in Texas — and we’re usually right, especially when it comes to chicken-fried steak. Here are just a few places on the upper Texas coast known for serving this Lone Star staple.
Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen
Cheddar’s is known for burgers, barbecue and more, but it’s famous for serving up one of Texas’ best chicken-fried steak offerings. Its country-fried steak is hand-battered on Texas toast topped with cream gravy. Try it with two of the restaurant’s made-from-scratch sides, but don’t forget those soft, hot croissants.

Gus’ Restaurant
If you’re on the mainland, it’s tradition to eat at Gus’ before or after a Friday night football game, or just because. Gus’ after 10 years is moving to a new space across the street, where it will serve its legendary chicken-fried steak, which comes with a heaping portion of French fries. Call ahead to ensure the restaurant has opened in its new space.
