In a record-breaking gala Sept. 19 at Tuscan Courtyard in Texas City, the College of the Mainland Foundation grossed more than $102,000 to help students reach their career and educational goals. Jacqueline Davis was named Miss Galveston and Olivia Danielle Mallard was named Miss Galveston’s Outstanding Teen at the Miss Galveston pageant Oct. 4 at The Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston. The pageant was revived to coincide with the 175th anniversary of the city of Galveston. The winners of each pageant will compete in the Miss Texas and Miss Texas’ Outstanding Teen pageants — the preliminaries to the Miss America and Miss America’s Outstanding Teen pageants. The Galveston Republican Women held a fundraiser Oct. 3 at the Hotel Galvez in Galveston. State and local government officials, business leaders and members of the community came out to support the organization. Included in the western-themed event was a barbecue buffet with all the trimmings, a live auction and plenty of two steppin’ action.

Denim & Diamonds was this year’s theme at the 14th annual Independence Village Gala on Sept. 27 at the Doyle Convention Center in Texas City. The gala featured dinner and dancing with the Pee Wee Bowen Band, a silent auction and gave attendees the opportunity to support Texas City’s assisted living facility for adults with disabilities.

The Texas City-La Marque Chamber of Commerce sponsored an action-packed evening Aug. 7 on Sixth Street beginning at the Texas City Museum for a cocktail hour, followed by a tribute to Roy and Sharon Jones and Jane Baucum. “Dancing with the Stars” took place at the Showboat Pavilion across the street from the museum.

The Galveston Art League commemorated 100 years on the island with a gala June 28 at the San Luis Convention Center. The evening’s festivities included dinner, drinks, live music and silent auction. Master of Ceremonies was KPRC-TV’s chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley.
